OHSU Casey Eye Institute photography exhibit, A Photographic Journey into Blindness, features works from two award-winning photographers
04/16/13 Portland, Ore.
WHAT
An upcoming photo exhibit at the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health & Science University will feature the parallel works of two award-winning photographers that serve to inspire and reveal the persistence and clarity one man has gained through vision loss.
Gary Albertson, internationally acclaimed fine landscape photographer, finds the world coming into focus as he loses his sight. Legally blind since 2010 with a rare form of glaucoma, Albertson has invented his own adaptive tools to stretch the limits of his remaining vision; his seasoned hands skillfully manipulate the instruments of his large-format 4 x 5 view camera with heightened senses and renewed intention. Albertson’s new portraits of nature are more intimate, often depicting new growth from old, almost as a testimony to his own rebirth of spirit. Jay Mather, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, provides witness to this journey from sight to insight with candid images of Albertson at work. Mather takes us down the trail as Albertson deftly navigates the banks of Central Oregon’s Metolius River.
Hear the artists’ stories in their own words and see Albertson demonstrate his photography method at the exhibit opening reception.
